The Department of State Services (DSS) has released the Bureau Chief of Daily Independent newspaper, Tony Ezimakor, following the declaration of protest by the pro-democracy group, OurMumuDonDo Movement. Ezimakor was released to his lawyer, Barr. Douglas Ekhator at about 10:30pm today, 7 days after he was detained for publishing a story the government did not like.
Ezimakor had written a story on February 22nd, 2018 relating to the ransom paid for the release of some of the abducted chibok girls and the roles played by a Swiss negotiator and his Nigerian collaborators.
The accuracy of Ezimakor's story had earned him the ire of the secret police, which led to his invitation and subsequent unlawful detention by the state security agency.
Following the declaration of the OurMumuDonDo Movement to occupy the DSS headquarters in defense of Ezimakor's basic rights, the secret police released him unconditionally today, 6 March 2018.
