The Centre for Advancement of Civil Liberties and Development, also known as Center for Liberty (CFL), has announced an alternative democratic solution to tackle fake news and hate speech without violating citizens’ rights to freedom of expression in the country.

The group said the proposed democratic solution, a document titled "Democratic Solutions to Fake News and Hate Speech," can help Nigeria combat fake news and hate speech in the same way that developed democratic countries around the world are combatting both challenges without sentencing their citizens to death.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday in Abuja during the public presentation of the document, Co-Convener of the group, Adebayo Raphael, said it is crucial to employ a democratic approach in dealing with fake news and hate speech. He added that this approach is what the document has outlined diligently, emphasizing that Nigeria will tremendously benefit from implementing it.
